The Problem
Media coverage of international conflicts is largely driven by what peace scholar Johan Galtung (1965) calls “war journalism”. This form of journalism emphasizes violence and sensationalism, relies heavily on elite voices and propaganda, and highlights victory framing.
The Model
Our model (under development) aims to understand how the news media can cover international conflicts in a way that is commercially viable and professional, without exasperating conflicts or hurting peace processes.
The Method
We aim to better understand which types of conflict-story frames, sources, images and evoked emotions, amongst other criteria, are likely to garner large audience interest and virality online. Read more →
